Imogen Claire Holst (* 12. April 1907 in Richmond upon Thames (Surrey); † 9. März 1984 in Aldeburgh, Suffolk) war eine englische Komponistin, Dirigentin und Musikschriftstellerin.

Leben

Imogen Claire Holst war die Tochter des Komponisten Gustav Holst und dessen Ehefrau Isobel Harrison. Sie besuchte die St Paul’s Girls School in Hammersmith und studierte am Royal College of Music in London. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs arbeitete sie von 1941 bis 1944 als Organisatorin beim Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts und von 1943 bis 1951 als musikalische Leiterin beim Arts Centre in der Dartington Hall School.

1952 ging Imogen Holst als Mitarbeiterin von Benjamin Britten nach Aldeburgh und wurde 1956 künstlerische Leiterin des dortigen Festivals. 1953 gründete sie die Purcell Singers, deren Dirigentin sie bis 1967 war. Von ihren Schriften erlangte vor allem die Biographie ihres Vaters größere Bekanntheit. Weitere Bücher von ihr befassen sich mit mittelalterlicher Musik, Volks-, Renaissance- und Barockmusik. Außer über ihren Vater schrieb sie Biographien zu William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Johann Sebastian Bach und Benjamin Britten.

Als Komponistin hinterließ Imogen Holst ein umfangreiches Werk, das sich mit instrumentalen, vokalen und orchestralen Genres befasst. Ebenso vielseitig arbeitete sie als Arrangeurin.

Life

Imogen Claire Holst was the daughter of the composer Gustav Holst and his wife Isobel Harrison. She attended St Paul’s Girls School in Hammersmith and studied at the Royal College of Music in London. During the Second World War she worked as an organiser with the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts from 1941 to 1944 and as musical director with the Arts Centre at Dartington Hall School from 1943 to 1951.

In 1952 Imogen Holst went to Aldeburgh as Benjamin Britten’s associate and became artistic director of the festival there in 1956. In 1953 she founded the Purcell Singers, of which she was conductor until 1967. Of her writings, it is the biography of her father that has achieved greater fame. Her other books deal with medieval, folk, Renaissance and baroque music. In addition to her father, she has written biographies of William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Johann Sebastian Bach and Benjamin Britten.

As a composer, Imogen Holst left behind an extensive body of work covering instrumental, vocal and orchestral genres. She was equally versatile as an arranger.
