Missy Mazzoli (* 27. Oktober 1980) ist eine amerikanische Pianistin und Komponistin.

Leben

Mazzoli wurde in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, geboren. Sie erwarb einen Bachelor-Abschluss am College of Fine Arts der Boston University, einen Master-Abschluss an der Yale School of Music im Jahr 2006 und studierte zusätzlich am Königlichen Konservatorium in Den Haag. Zu ihren Lehrern zählen David Lang, Louis Andriessen, Aaron Jay Kernis, Martin Bresnick, Martijn Padding und John Harbison.

Im Jahr 2006 unterrichtete Mazzoli Komposition an der Musikabteilung der Yale University, 2013 war sie Gastdozentin an der New York University. Von 2007 bis 2010 war sie geschäftsführende Direktorin des MATA-Festivals in New York City, einer Organisation, die die Arbeit junger Komponisten fördert.

Mazzolis Musik wurde vom Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird, dem Minnesota Orchestra, der Geigerin Jennifer Koh, der Cellistin Maya Beiser, dem Pianisten Emanuel Ax, dem NOW Ensemble, der Los Angeles Opera, der Cincinnati Opera, dem Los Angeles Philharmonic, dem Chicago Symphony, dem American Composers Orchestra, dem South Carolina Philharmonic, dem Dubliner Crash Ensemble, ETHEL und vielen anderen aufgeführt, unter anderem in der Carnegie Hall und dem Sydney Opera House. Von 2012 bis 2015 war sie Composer-in-Residence bei der Opera Philadelphia, der Gotham Chamber Opera und der Music Theatre-Group, und 2011/12 war sie Composer/educator in residence bei der Albany Symphony.

Mazzoli hat bisher drei Alben mit ihrer Musik veröffentlicht: Cathedral City, geschrieben für ihre Band Victoire (2010), Song from the Uproar, die Originalaufnahme ihrer ersten Oper (2012), und Vespers for a New Dark Age (2015), ein Werk für ihre Band Victoire in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schlagzeuger Glenn Kotche (von Wilco) und den Sängerinnen Martha Cluver, Melissa Hughes und Virginia Kelsey. Vespers for a New Dark Age wurde von der Carnegie Hall in Auftrag gegeben und dort im Februar 2014 uraufgeführt. Alle Platten von Mazzoli wurden bei dem in Brooklyn ansässigen Label New Amsterdam Records veröffentlicht.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, a master’s degree from the Yale School of Music in 2006, and additionally studied at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague. Her teachers include David Lang, Louis Andriessen, Aaron Jay Kernis, Martin Bresnick, Martijn Padding, and John Harbison.

In 2006 Mazzoli taught composition in the music department of Yale University, and in 2013 was a guest lecturer at New York University. From 2007 to 2010 was executive director of the MATA Festival in New York City, an organization dedicated to promoting the work of young composers.

Mazzoli’s music has been performed by the Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird, the Minnesota Orchestra, violinist Jennifer Koh, cellist Maya Beiser, pianist Emanuel Ax, NOW Ensemble, Los Angeles Opera, Cincinnati Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the American Composers Orchestra, the South Carolina Philharmonic, Dublin’s Crash Ensemble, ETHEL and many others in venues including Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. From 2012-2015 she was composer-in-residence with the Opera Philadelphia, Gotham Chamber Opera and Music Theatre-Group, and in 2011/12 was composer/educator in residence with the Albany Symphony.

Mazzoli has released three full-length albums of her music to date: Cathedral City, written for her band Victoire (2010), Song from the Uproar, the original cast recording of her first opera (2012), and Vespers for a New Dark Age (2015), a work for her band Victoire in collaboration with percussionist Glenn Kotche (of Wilco) and vocalists Martha Cluver, Melissa Hughes and Virginia Kelsey. Vespers for a New Dark Age was commissioned by Carnegie Hall and premiered there in February 2014. All of Mazzoli’s records were released on Brooklyn-based label New Amsterdam Records.
