Anna Tebogo Matilda Monnakgotla (* 25. März 1972 in Uppsala, Schweden) ist eine schwedische Komponistin.

Leben

Tebogo Monnakgotla wurde in Uppsala geboren und ist in aufgewachsen, wo sie im Alter von zehn Jahren mit dem Cellospiel begann. Nach dem Besuch der Musikschule Södra Latin studierte sie ab 1994 Cello und Komposition bei Jan Sandström an der Musikhochschule in Piteå und ab 1999 Komposition an der Königlichen Musikhochschule in Stockholm.

Sie hat Musik für eine Reihe von Ensembles geschrieben, darunter das Chamber Ensemble, Musica Vitae, Avanti!, das Schwedische Radio-Sinfonieorchester und den Radio-Chor. In ihrem musikalischen Schaffen verwendet sie gerne Poesie und hat mit einer Reihe von Dichtern wie Li Li, Göran Malmqvist, Oliveira Silveira und Ann Jäderlund zusammengearbeitet. Eine ihrer Kollaborationen mit Li Li, Bamboo in the Language of Birches, wurde 2006 vom International Rostrum of Composers als “Recommended Work” ausgezeichnet.

In den Jahren 2007-08 war Tebogo Monnakgotla Hauskomponist des Schwedischen Rundfunks, eine Aufgabe, die laut SR an “die besten jungen Komponisten” geht. Sie wurde 2007 zum Mitglied des schwedischen Komponistenverbands gewählt und ist auch Mitglied von Inversion, einer Vereinigung von Komponistinnen und Dirigentinnen, die sich dafür einsetzen, zeitgenössische Musik einem breiteren Publikum zugänglich zu machen.

2017 erhielt sie den Carin Malmlöf-Forssling-Preis.
2018 wurde ihre Oper Jean-Joseph für den Musikpreis des Nordischen Rates nominiert.

Life

Tebogo Monnakgotla was born and raised in Uppsala, where she began playing the cello at the age of ten. After attending the Södra Latin Music School, she studied cello and composition with Jan Sandström at the Piteå Academy of Music from 1994 and composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm from 1999.

She has written music for a number of ensembles, including the Chamber Ensemble, Musica Vitae, Avanti!, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Radio Choir. She enjoys using poetry in her musical work and has collaborated with a number of poets including Li Li, Göran Malmqvist, Oliveira Silveira and Ann Jäderlund. One of her collaborations with Li Li, Bamboo in the Language of Birches, was awarded “Recommended Work” by the International Rostrum of Composers in 2006.

In 2007-08, Tebogo Monnakgotla was the house composer for the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation, a task that, according to SR, goes to “the best young composers”. She was elected a member of the Swedish Composers’ Association in 2007 and is also a member of Inversion, an association of female composers and conductors working to make contemporary music accessible to a wider audience.

In 2017, she received the Carin Malmlöf-Forssling Prize.
In 2018, her opera Jean-Joseph was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize.
