Diana Rotaru (* 1981 in Bukarest) ist eine rumänische Komponistin.

Leben

Diana Rotaru (geb. 1981, Bukarest) ist eine der bekanntesten jungen rumänischen Komponistinnen und hat von Kammer- und Orchestermusik bis hin zu Kammeropern und Soundtracks für Multimedia- oder Tanzshows und Kurzfilme geschrieben. Ihre Musik erforscht verschiedene Ausdrucksrichtungen, von Hypnagogie oder präoneirischer Ästhetik, weiblicher Psyche, Humor oder imaginärer Folklore.

Als Hauptkoordinatorin des rumänischen Musikinformationszentrums (CIMRO) ist sie auch als Förderin der neuen Musik in Rumänien tätig. Seit 2019 ist sie Präsidentin der rumänischen Sektion der ISCM und künstlerische Leiterin des internationalen Festivals für neue Musik MERIDIAN. Von 2012 bis 2021 war sie die künstlerische Leiterin des Ensembles für Neue Musik SonoMania.

Diana Rotaru hat zahlreiche Preise erhalten, darunter den George-Enescu-Preis der Rumänischen Akademie (2010), den ISCM-IAMIC Young Composer Award (World Music Days, Vilnius, 2008), den Irino-Preis (Japan, 2004) oder den George-Enescu-Preis ex-aequo (Rumänien, 2003 und 2005). Ihre Werke wurden vom Ensemble XXI (Dijon), dem Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, Pärlor för svin, der Ernst von Siemens Stiftung, dem Takefu International Music Festival usw. in Auftrag gegeben.

Im Herbst 2007 war sie Stipendiatin an der Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris mit einem George-Enescu-Stipendium des Rumänischen Kulturinstituts. Im April 2011 war sie Artist-in-Residence in der Villa Sträuli, Winterthur (Schweiz), auf Einladung des Ensemble TaG, das ihre Musik in dieser Zeit in zwei Konzerten aufführte (Verborgen in einer Muschel/ Hidden Inside a Shell – Theater am Gleis und Meet the Artist: Diana Rotaru -Villa Sträuli). Von April bis Juni 2015 war sie Artist-in-Residence in Wien, mit einem Stipendium des österreichischen Bundeskanzleramtes & KulturKontakt Wien.

Diana Rotaru unterrichtet derzeit Komposition und Musikanalyse an der Nationalen Universität für Musik in Bukarest, wo sie bei Ştefan Niculescu und Dan Dediu (2000-2005) studiert hat und wo sie in Komposition promoviert hat (mit der Dissertation The Recent Trance and the Principle of Repetition in New Music, 2012). Außerdem studierte sie Komposition bei Frédéric Durieux am Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (2005-2006). Sie nahm an verschiedenen Sommerkompositionskursen wie Acanthes (Metz, 2008), Voix Nouvelles-Royaumont (2002 und 2006) oder dem Internationalen Bartok-Seminar (Szombathely, 2003) teil und arbeitete dabei u.a. mit Jonathan Harvey, Savatore Sciarrino, Brian Ferneyhough oder Michael Jarrell. Im September 2018 wurde sie eingeladen, als Assistenzprofessorin von Toshio Hosokawa beim Takefu International Music Festival in Japan zu arbeiten.

Life

One of the most visible young Romanian composers, Diana Rotaru (b. 1981, Bucharest) has written from chamber and orchestral music to chamber opera and soundtracks for multimedia or dance shows and short films. Her music explores different expressive directions, from hypnagogia or pre-oneiric aesthetics, feminine psyche, humor or imaginary folklore.

She is also active as a promoter of new music in Romania, as the main coordinator of the Romanian Music Information Center (CIMRO). Since 2019 she is President of the ISCM Romanian Section and Artistic Director of the MERIDIAN international new music festival. She was the Artistic Director of the SonoMania new music ensemble between 2012-2021.

Diana Rotaru has won numerous prizes, among which the Romanian Academy’s George Enescu Award (2010), the ISCM-IAMIC Young Composer Award (World Music Days, Vilnius, 2008), the Irino Prize (Japan, 2004) or the George Enescu Prize ex-aequo (Romania, 2003 and 2005). Her works have been commissioned by Ensemble XXI (Dijon), Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, Pärlor för svin, Ernst von Siemens Foundation, Takefu International Music Festival, etc.

She was a resident at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (autumn 2007), on a George Enescu grant from the Romanian Cultural Institute. In April 2011 she was an Artist-in-Residence at Villa Sträuli, Winterthur (Switzerland), at the invitation of Ensemble TaG, who performed her music in two concerts during that period (Verborgen in einer Muschel/ Hidden Inside a Shell – Theater am Gleis and Meet the Artist: Diana Rotaru -Villa Sträuli). In April-June 2015 she was Artist-in-Residence in Vienna, with a grant offered by the Austrian Federal Chancellery & KulturKontakt Vienna.

Diana Rotaru is currently teaching composition and music analysis at the National University of Music in Bucharest, where she studied with Ştefan Niculescu and Dan Dediu (2000-2005) and where she has a PhD in Composition (with the dissertation The Recent Trance and the Principle of Repetition in New Music, 2012). She also studied composition with Frédéric Durieux at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (2005-2006). She participated at different summer composition courses such as Acanthes (Metz, 2008), Voix Nouvelles-Royaumont (2002 and 2006), or the International Bartok Seminary (Szombathely, 2003), thus working with Jonathan Harvey, Savatore Sciarrino, Brian Ferneyhough or Michael Jarrell, among others. In September 2018 she was invited to be an assistant professor to Toshio Hosokawa at the Takefu International Music Festival in Japan.
