Elizabeth Stirling a.k.a. Elizabeth Bridge (* 26. Februar 1819; † 25. März 1895) war eine englische Organistin und Komponistin.

Leben

Elizabeth Stirling wurde in Greenwich, London, geboren und studierte Klavier und Orgel an der Royal Academy of Music bei Edward Holmes und W. B. Wilson sowie Harmonielehre bei James Alexander Hamilton und Sir George Macfarren. Im Jahr 1837 gab sie ein Konzert in der St. Katherine’s Church, Regent’s Park, das von der Zeitschrift The Musical World rezensiert wurde.

Im Jahr 1839 nahm sie eine Stelle als Organistin an der All Saints Church in Poplar an, wo sie bis 1858 blieb. In diesem Jahr bewarb sie sich erfolgreich um die Stelle der Organistin an St. Andrew Undershaft, die sie bis 1880 innehatte. Als Organistin war sie für ihr außergewöhnliches Pedalspiel bekannt. Sie veröffentlichte zwei große Voluntarii, sechs Pedalfugen, acht langsame Sätze und andere Orgelstücke, über fünfzig Lieder und Duette sowie Bearbeitungen von Werken von Bach, Mozart und Händel. Ihr bekanntestes Lied war “All Among the Barley”.

1863 heiratete sie Frederick Albert Bridge (“F.A. Bridge”) (1841-1917), Fotograf, Chorleiter von St Martin-in-the-Fields und Organist und Chorleiter von St Martin, Ludgate.

Life

Elizabeth Stirling was born in Greenwich, London, and studied piano and organ at the Royal Academy of Music with Edward Holmes and W. B. Wilson, and harmony with James Alexander Hamilton and Sir George Macfarren. In 1837 she performed a recital at St. Katherine’s Church, Regent’s Park, which was reviewed by The Musical World.

In 1839 she took a position as organist at All Saints Church, Poplar, where she remained until 1858. In that year, she was the successful competitor for the post of organist at St Andrew Undershaft, a position she filled until 1880. As an organist, she was noted for her exceptional pedal playing. She published two grand voluntaries; six pedal fugues; eight slow movements and other organ-pieces, over fifty songs and duets, and arrangements of the works of Bach, Mozart and Handel. Her most popular song was “All Among the Barley”.

In 1863, she married Frederick Albert Bridge (‘F.A. Bridge’) (1841–1917), photographer, choirmaster of St Martin-in-the-Fields and organist and choirmaster of St Martin, Ludgate.
