Agata Zubel (* 25. Januar 1978 in Wrocław) ist eine polnische Komponistin und Sängerin.

Leben

Agata Zubel wuchs in Wrocław (dt. Breslau) auf und besuchte dort die Karol-Lipiński-Musikakademie. Sie studierte Komposition bei Jan Wichrowski und Gesang bei Danuta Paziuk-Zipser und promovierte 2004 im Fach Musik. Seither arbeitet sie an der Akademie als Dozentin. Zubel ging zum Studium auch an das Conservatorium Enschede in den Niederlanden und erhielt eine Reihe von Förderungen und Stipendien, so des Polnischen Kulturministeriums, der Rockefeller Foundation und der Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung. Bei den Internationalen Darmstädter Ferienkursen nahm sie an einem experimentellen Improvisationsprojekt teil.

Als Gesangssolistin kümmert sie sich besonders um die zeitgenössische Musik und war so an Aufführungen dieser Werke beteiligt: Chantefleurs et Chantefables von Witold Lutosławski, DW9 von Bernhard Lang, Luci mie traditrici von Salvatore Sciarrino, The Star von Zygmunt Krauze in der elektroakustischen Adaption von Cezary Duchnowsky. Auf der Opernbühne sang sie 2006 die “Phädra” in der Oper Fedra von Dobromiła Jaskot, sowie 2009 die Partie der “Madline” in The Fall of the House of Usher von Philip Glass an der Polnischen Nationaloper.

Zubel ist Preisträgerin zahlreicher nationaler und internationaler Wettbewerbe – sowohl für Komposition als auch für Gesang, so 2002 des „Internationalen Krzysztof Penderecki Wettbewerbes für zeitgenössische Kammermusik“ und des „CHAIN Concours Moderne“. Anfang 2005 erhielt sie den Preis Paszport Polityki für klassische Musik. 2018 erhielt sie in Berlin den Europäischen Komponistenpreis. Auftragsarbeiten umfassen das Streichquartett Nr.1 für das Ultraschall Festival in Berlin (2007), Lieder für Wratislavia Cantans in Breslau (2007), Cascando für das “Central European Music Festival” in Seattle (2007).

Mit dem Komponisten und Pianisten Cezary Duchnowski gründete sie 2001 das ElettroVoce Duo.

Life

Agata Zubel grew up in Wrocław and attended the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music there. She studied composition with Jan Wichrowski and singing with Danuta Paziuk-Zipser and received her doctorate in music in 2004. Since then she has worked at the academy as a lecturer. Zubel also studied at the Enschede Conservatory in the Netherlands and has received a number of grants and scholarships, including from the Polish Ministry of Culture, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. She participated in an experimental improvisation project at the International Darmstadt Summer Courses.

As a vocal soloist, she is particularly concerned with contemporary music and has thus been involved in performances of these works: Chantefleurs et Chantefables by Witold Lutosławski, DW9 by Bernhard Lang, Luci mie traditrici by Salvatore Sciarrino, The Star by Zygmunt Krauze in the electroacoustic adaptation by Cezary Duchnowsky. On the opera stage she sang “Phaedra” in the opera Fedra by Dobromiła Jaskot in 2006, as well as the role of “Madline” in The Fall of the House of Usher by Philip Glass at the Polish National Opera in 2009.

Zubel is a laureate of numerous national and international competitions – both for composition and singing, such as the “International Krzysztof Penderecki Competition for Contemporary Chamber Music” and the “CHAIN Concours Moderne” in 2002. In early 2005, she received the Paszport Polityki prize for classical music. In 2018, she received the European Composers Prize in Berlin. Commissioned works include String Quartet No.1 for the Ultraschall Festival in Berlin (2007), Songs for Wratislavia Cantans in Wroclaw (2007), Cascando for the “Central European Music Festival” in Seattle (2007).

With the composer and pianist Cezary Duchnowski she founded the ElettroVoce Duo in 2001.
