Dame Ethel Mary Smyth (* 23. April 1858 in Sidcup; † 8. Mai 1944 in Woking) war eine englische Komponistin, Dirigentin, Schriftstellerin und eine der Mitkämpferinnen der britischen Suffragetten.

Leben

Ethel Smyths Leben war wesentlich davon geprägt, sich als Komponistin durchzusetzen und als solche Anerkennung in der Öffentlichkeit zu finden. Sie hatte den Anspruch, in ihrer Arbeit nicht als nebenher komponierende Lady, sondern als gleichwertig zu ihren männlichen Kollegen gesehen zu werden und von ihrer Arbeit zu leben. Ihre Kompositionen umfassen sinfonische Werke, Kammermusik, Chorwerke und Opern. Ihre bekannteste Oper ist The Wreckers (deutsch Strandrecht). Ihr bekanntestes Werk ist allerdings The March of Women, das zu einer Hymne der englischen Frauenbewegung wurde.

Life

Ethel Smyth’s life was largely shaped by asserting herself as a composer and gaining public recognition as such. She aspired to be seen not as a lady composing on the side, but as an equal to her male colleagues and to make a living from her work. Her compositions include symphonic works, chamber music, choral works and operas. Her best known opera is The Wreckers (German Strandrecht). Her best-known work, however, is The March of Women, which became an anthem of the English women’s movement.
