Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (* 30. April 1939 in Miami, Florida) ist eine US-amerikanische Violinistin und Komponistin. Sie erhielt 1983 als erste Frau den Pulitzer-Preis in Musik.

Leben

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich begann im Alter von 17 Jahren ein Studium an der Florida State University. Nachdem sie 1960 den Grad des Bachelor of Music erlangte, schloss sie 1962 das Studium dort mit Master of Music ab.
Anschließend zog sie nach New York studierte bei Ivan Galamian Violine und spielte sieben Jahre im 1962 von Leopold Stokowski gegründeten American Symphony Orchestra.

Erste größere Aufmerksamkeit als Komponistin erhielt sie 1973, als ihr Werk Symposium von Pierre Boulez dirigiert wurde.

Im Jahr 1975 absolvierte Ellen Taaffe Zwilich als erste Frau ihre Promotion zum Dr. mus. in Komposition an der Juilliard School of Music. Zu ihren Lehrern zählen John Boda, Elliott Carter und Roger Sessions.

Im Jahr 1983 erhielt sie als erste Frau den Pulitzer-Preis in Musik für ihr Werk Three Movements for Orchestra (Symphony No. 1). In der Folge erhielt sie zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen: den Academy Award der American Academy of Arts and Letters, den Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Chamber Music Prize, den Arturo Toscanini Music Critics Award, die Ernst von Dohnányi Citation, den NPR and WNYC Gotham Award für Beiträge zum musikalischen Leben New Yorks, ein Guggenheim-Stipendium und vier Grammy-Nominierungen, den Alfred I. Dupont Award, den Miami Performing Arts Center Award, die Goldmedaille im Giovanni-Battista-Viotti-Wettbewerb.

Zwischen 1995 und 1999 war sie die erste Inhaberin des Composer’s Chair an der Carnegie Hall. 1999 war sie Musical America’s ‚Composer of the Year‘.

Sie ist Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Letters (seit 1992) und der American Academy of Arts and Sciences (seit 2004) und wurde in die American Classical Music Hall of Fame und die Florida Artists Hall of Fame gewählt.

Zwilich war als Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor an der Florida State University tätig.

Life

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich began studying at Florida State University at the age of 17. After obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree in 1960, she graduated with a Master of Music degree in 1962.
She then moved to New York to study violin with Ivan Galamian and played for seven years in the American Symphony Orchestra founded by Leopold Stokowski in 1962.

She received her first major attention as a composer in 1973 when her work Symposium was conducted by Pierre Boulez.

In 1975, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich became the first woman to complete her doctorate in composition at the Juilliard School of Music. Her teachers include John Boda, Elliott Carter and Roger Sessions.

In 1983, she was the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Music for her work Three Movements for Orchestra (Symphony No. 1). She has subsequently received numerous awards and honours: the Academy Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Chamber Music Prize, the Arturo Toscanini Music Critics Award, the Ernst von Dohnányi Citation, the NPR and WNYC Gotham Award for contributions to the musical life of New York, a Guggenheim Fellowship and four Grammy nominations, the Alfred I. Dupont Award, the Miami Performing Arts Center Award, the Gold Medal in the Giovanni Battista Viotti Competition.

Between 1995 and 1999, she was the first holder of the Composer’s Chair at Carnegie Hall. In 1999 she was Musical America’s ‘Composer of the Year’.

She was married to the violinist Joseph Zwilich (1919-1979).
