Elizabeth Brown Larsen Libby (* 24. Dezember 1950) ist eine amerikanische Komoponistin.

Libby Larsen wurde am 24. Dezember 1950 in Wilmington, Delaware, als Tochter von Robert Larsen und Alice Brown Larsen geboren. Sie war die dritte von fünf Töchtern in der Familie, und im Alter von drei Jahren zog Libby mit ihrer Familie nach Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Ihre ersten musikalischen Erfahrungen machte sie, als sie drei Jahre alt war. Sie beobachtete den Klavierunterricht ihrer älteren Schwester zu Hause und ahmte später das Gehörte nach. Ihre formale musikalische Ausbildung begann bei den Nonnen von Saint Joseph of Carondelet an der Christ the King School. Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler sangen gregorianische Gesänge und lernten das Blattspiel mit Hilfe der beweglichen „do“ Solfege. Die rhythmische Flexibilität und die Prosodie des Textes, die Larsen durch den Gesang erlernte, zeigten ihr, dass es in der Musik Freiheit gibt – ein Konzept, das sich als sehr einflussreich für ihre zukünftigen Kompositionen erweisen sollte. Zusätzlich zu ihrer klassischen Ausbildung war Larsens Vater Amateur-Klarinettist in einer Dixieland-Band, und ihre Mutter spielte Boogie-Woogie auf dem Plattenspieler, was ihr einen vielseitigen und sehr amerikanischen musikalischen Hintergrund verschaffte.
Larsen besuchte die University of Minnesota, wo sie sowohl ihr Grund- als auch ihr Aufbaustudium absolvierte. Sie erhielt 1971 einen Bachelor of Arts in Theorie und Komposition, 1975 einen Master of Arts in Komposition und 1978 einen Doktortitel in Theorie und Komposition. Während ihres Studiums an der Universität studierte sie Komposition bei Dominick Argento, Paul Fetler und Eric Stokes. 1975 heiratete Larsen James Reece, den sie an der Universität kennengelernt hatte.
1973 gründete Larsen zusammen mit ihrem Kollegen Stephen Paulus das Minnesota Composers Forum mit dem Ziel, eine öffentliche Plattform und ein Publikum für das Schreiben und die Aufführung neuer Kompositionen zu schaffen und gleichzeitig praktische Hilfe in geschäftlichen Angelegenheiten, wie der Beantragung von Stipendien und der Aushandlung von Verträgen, zu leisten. 1996 änderte die Organisation ihren Namen in American Composers Forum und gründete Zweigstellen in Städten im ganzen Land, darunter New York, Atlanta, Washington D.C. und Los Angeles, um nur einige zu nennen. Der Hauptsitz der Organisation befindet sich nach wie vor in St. Paul, Minnesota.
1983 wurde Larsen zu einer der beiden Composer-in-Residence des Minnesota Orchestra ernannt und war damit die erste Frau, die als Resident Composer bei einem großen Orchester tätig war. Sie komponierte ihre erste Sinfonie Water Music für das Minnesota Orchestra, die 1985 unter Sir Neville Marriner uraufgeführt wurde. Während ihrer Zeit beim Minnesota Orchestra untersuchte Larsen die Gründe für die geringe Besucherzahl von Menschen ihres Alters bei klassischen Konzerten und warum außereuropäische Komponisten in Konzertprogrammen nicht angemessen vertreten waren. Dies führte sie zu Studien über die klassische Musik in Amerika und ihren Platz in der amerikanischen Kultur, deren Ergebnisse sie in ihren Kompositionen und anderen philosophischen Projekten verarbeitet hat. Im Jahr 1986 wurde ihre Tochter Wynne geboren.
Larsen organisierte und übernahm 1993 die künstlerische Leitung der Hot Notes Series (gesponsert vom Schubert Club of St. Paul), die sich auf das moderne Keyboard konzentriert, insbesondere auf die Interaktion zwischen Interpret und synthetischem Klang. Diese Interaktion ist zu einem Merkmal ihrer späteren Werke geworden, darunter Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus (1990), basierend auf dem Buch von Mary Shelley. In diesem Werk wurden elektronische visuelle Effekte wie Projektoren und Bildschirme im Theater eingesetzt, die während der gesamten Oper verschiedene Perspektiven (z. B. die des Monsters oder die von Frankenstein selbst) zeigten. Diese Oper war Larsens erste Auseinandersetzung mit technischen Klängen und wurde von USA Today zu einem der acht besten klassischen Musikereignisse des Jahres 1990 gewählt.
1993 gewann sie einen Grammy Award als Produzentin der besten klassischen Gesangsdarbietung für „The Art of Arlene Augér“, die ihren Liederzyklus Sonnets from the Portuguese enthält. Im Jahr 1996 erhielt sie die Ehrendoktorwürde sowohl vom St. Mary’s College/Notre Dame als auch von der Universität von Nebraska.
Larsen ist nicht nur als Komponistin, sondern auch als Musikphilosophin und Rednerin bekannt. Sie hat Grundsatzreden gehalten, unter anderem bei der League of American Orchestras, der American Choral Directors Association, der American Orff-Schulwerk Association National Convention, der Concert Band Directors National Association, der Dominique de Menil Presidential Lecture Series an der Rice University (2001), der Music Educators National Convention und der National Association of Schools of Music. Von 2003 bis 2004 war sie die erste Inhaberin des Harissios-Papamarkou-Lehrstuhls für Bildung und Technologie an der Library of Congress.
Im Jahr 2010 wurde Larsen mit der George-Peabody-Medaille für herausragende Beiträge zur Musik in Amerika ausgezeichnet.
